Creating calming spaces for reflecting and relaxing

Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we’re helping to enhance the environment across Guy’s and St Thomas’ – creating calm, peaceful spaces to benefit the health and wellbeing of patients and the dedicated staff who care for them.

Hospitals can be busy and noisy places, with a hubbub of visitors, patients and healthcare workers going about their day.

We know that having moments for contemplation and calm are important for wellbeing – particularly for the incredible NHS staff who go above and beyond every day to take care of people.

This is why, thanks to our incredible supporters, we’ve brought the award-winning Florence Nightingale Garden to St Thomas’ Hospital. The garden was originally commissioned by The Burdett Trust for Nursing for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Opened at its new permanent home at St Thomas’ Hospital on International Nurses’ Day, and the 202nd anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth, the garden provides a place for respite and recovery.

“The garden is a very welcome gift that our patients, staff and visitors will be able to enjoy. It is beautifully designed and will offer an oasis of calm in a busy hospital environment”

Avey Bhatia, Chief Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’

The theme of the garden is ‘nurture through nature’ and reflects the life and character of Florence and her ideas about the importance of green spaces, light and air in hospital settings.

Florence is considered the pioneer of modern nursing, and established the first professional nursing school in the world at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1860.

We’re passionate about caring for the inspirational teams at Guy’s and St Thomas’, and creating spaces for the tireless staff to rest and recharge is at the heart of what we do. Thanks to the support of our donors, we’re able to fund the broadest staff health and wellbeing offer in the NHS.

Donate today to help take care of the exceptional NHS staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’.
