Supporting LGBT+ inclusive healthcare
We are proudly supporting the launch of a new Progress Pride badge for Guy’s and St Thomas’ staff who want to show their commitment to LGBT+ inclusive healthcare.
The new design, which launched on the 20th anniversary of LGBT+ History Month, updates the six-striped rainbow flag with the Progress Pride flag to better represent the many identities within the LGBT+ community.
Wearers of the badge are showing that they provide a safe, open and non-judgemental space for patients to talk about issues of sexuality and gender identity.
The badges are just one part of a range of activities at Guy’s and St Thomas’ to ensure everyone is treated with dignity and respect, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The initiative builds on the Trust’s LGBT+ inclusion statement, and aims to promote an environment where LGBT+ staff, patients and visitors feel welcome, safe and respected.
"Our funding of the Progress Pride badges initiative shows our commitment to tackling the inequitable healthcare for our very diverse community in South London. I am extremely proud that we are supporting Guy’s and St Thomas’ to create a welcoming, friendly, inclusive environment for LGBT+ patients and staff.”
Laurie Lee, Chief Executive, Guy’s & St Thomas’ Charity
The rainbow badge initiative was originally developed by Evelina London, and was rolled out across the Trust in February 2019. A year later, seven in 10 NHS Trusts had followed Guy’s and St Thomas’ lead and adopted the badges.
Guy’s and St Thomas’ remains part of the NHS Rainbow Badge project, which is now a national assessment and accreditation model allowing NHS Trusts to demonstrate their commitment to reducing barriers to healthcare for LGBT+ people.
This pioneering initiative was made possible thanks to the generosity of our exceptional supporters.
Together, we can continue to provide a safe and inclusive space for patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’.
